After establising a standard mix I started experimenting with different sizes, shapes, joints and colorants. These expreriments are the “introduction” to the design phase. Papercrete panels can be produced in a variety of sizes. The limiting factor is the thickness rather that the size of the panel. I managed to produce panels up to 2x1m without any problem (except the long drying period), but when I tried to experiment on thickness, all the slabs thinner than 3mm broke. Mock ups with delicate small details broke.
- This blog is about research on papercrete as part of my graduation project.
Papercrete is an experimental material which replaces some amount of cement with paper pulp in the mix. There is no information about its structural behavior and durability, that why its use remains limited. The goal is to bring papercrete closer to standardization.
Good design idea will be the one which combine all the materials properties, low price – lightweight – flexibility -surface texture. Papercrete facade panels have the potential to be competitive to the market.
